Jordan thank you for your comment, and I agree with you that the metrics you mention still have significant value, as long as they are used correctly. As long as the headlong rush for the top right corner of the graph is relaxed, and as a friend of mine puts it we deal with "the cult of volume" when measuring traffic, then there's no reason why these different types of measurements shouldn't peacefully co-exist.

I agree with you 90%

But if you measure the right things e.g. AdWords spend against total purchase amounts, then I think this sort of graph is still useful...

I seem to always be in an alternative presentation every time Lee gives a talk!

Lookaly is certainly an impressive web site - so good luck with that one Lee, and roll the offers of suitcases of cash from people we have not actively sought out as clients (it has even happened to me - so it can happen to anyone :-)

I agree. Sometimes position one in the organic results is below the fold!

Here is another interesting article about local from Michael Wall:-

http://www.michaelwall.co.uk/local-search/7-pack-and-google-local-listings-ads/

Similarly - if you sell physical products and you don't have a Google Shopping Feed, then you are putting yourself at a serious disadvantage even if you are number one in the organic results for a product you sell..

Where will it all end?

World domination by Google by the looks of things :-)

Iain uses the phrase "word of mouth"

Social media has been described as "word of mouth on steroids"

This means that the old rules for managaing word of mouth in terms of looking after the customer, being aware of your message and managing it consistently through marketing, PR, Sales and opertaions all apply, only on a much larger playing field than before!

mmmmmm.............. Not so sure they are stoopid Niall. Contrarianism rules OK. It just might get them noticed in all the noise because of the seeming bloomer.
I think I'd buy that campaign. But then what does Grumpy Old Will know??
